MOVIE RESURRECTS HOWARD HUGHES AND HIS FLAMING CRASH
Hollywood's treatment of Howard Hughes in The Aviator movie has sparked
new interest in the eccentric man's life. TV documentaries have been broadcast,
books have reappeared on the shelves at bookstores, and people are again
watching Hughes' Hell's Angels, the most expensive movie of its time. Pilots,
in particular, have turned to the Web and are dissecting the spectacular
crash of the twin-engine XF-11 in Beverly Hills in 1946. To the music of
Bach, the movie recounts how Hughes piloted the airplane himself on its
maiden flight and decided to do a tour of the Los Angeles Basin. But when
the right propeller control ran out of oil because of a leak, the rear portion
of the counterrotating prop kicked into reverse pitch, causing a severe
yawing moment. Hughes damaged three homes in the flaming crash. There are
photos and more details on the crash at this site. |
